Abstrakty : Possible ways of improving the stability of the fragments of the femur under elongation by introducing hybrid implant systems (the Kirschner wires and the Schanz screws) into the Ilizarov fixator structure were explored. Laboratory studies were conducted on physical models with the fixator mounted on a pipe section modelling the femur shaft. Ten modifications of the Ilizarov fixator were developed and tested. The designs differed in the kind and configuration of implants. The effect of the developed Ilizarov fixator designs was examined by comparing the coefficients of axial, transversal and torsional rigidity of the structures. The research results clearly show that the Ilizarov fixator's rigidity (particularly transversal rigidity) coefficients can be considerably increased by replacing the Kirschner wires with the Schanz screws or using hybrid systems of these implants. As a result, the stability of the femur fragments improves and so does the quality of the regenerated bone, which makes it possible to reduce the treatment time to a minimum.

Abstrakty : The paper presents the results of measuring the occlusion forces in the group of 163 subjects being tested. In the research, the method based on the dependence of the plastic deformity and force intending the spherical penetrator upon each other in a metal sample was implemented. The results obtained allowed us to estimate the distribution of occlusion forces along the alveolar ridge and to define the dimensions of the maximum forces applied, while biting and gnawing. The biting force between the first incisors for different angles of parting mandible was also measured.

Abstrakty : Numerical simulation of the cardiovascular haemodynamics has become a useful tool of the surgeon who diagnoses cardiovascular diseases and recommends the way of their medical treatment. The numerical model of the cardiovascular system of pulsating type imitating the electrochemical and mechanical activity of heart muscle and being under a short-term baroreflex control has been implemented to diagnose more accurate a patient's haemodynamic profile. This model enables thus the simulation of the haemodynamic reaction due to the baroreflex response at various perturbations in the circulatory system. The haemodynamic behaviour of the cardiovascular system in the cases of the heart failure as a consequence of the left-ventricular hypocontractility, with the usage of the heart support device and the circulatory failure caused by haemorrhagic shock are demonstrated.

Abstrakty : Sodium fluoride (NaF) is an agent promoting bone formation around the hip implant and it can be used as an additive in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. The influence of such an addition on the fatigue endurance of the material as used in biomedical applications was tested. Fatigue tests were performed to simulate the mode of loading that the cement mantle withstands in vivo. Tensile tests were conducted according to current standards and based on protocols being previously validated. The results obtained prove that the addition of NaF (12% in weight) to PMMA bone cement does not have any detrimental effect on the fatigue resistance of the material. This percentage is higher than that normally used for BaS04 that is added to PMMA as a radiopacifier. This latter addition was proved to reduce the fatigue resistance of the material.

Abstrakty : This paper presents a numerical analysis of the state of stress in a new type of splint used for carpal arthrodesis. Using the finite element method we evaluated the state of stress of the splint and the respective bones in two important load cases. Results of the numerical analysis were confirmed by photoelasticity test applied to the splint model. A qualitative comparison of different approaches to modelling short bones used in the finite element method is also made.

Abstrakty : The bone tissue remodelling is a relatively slow process. In physiologically “normal” conditions, it tends towards the state of remodelling equilibrium. In the state of final remodelling equilibrium, the strain energy reaches its minimum. In the life of each human being, the bone tissue passes through the repeating limit cycles of its development, functioning and destruction. The paper presented is aimed at the biomechanochemical processes within one limit cycle of bone remodelling using the stoichiometric equations and kinetic equations. Each limit cycle of the bone tissue remodelling (in its assumed volume element) consists of several stages, in which the biochemical reactions are proceeding in a highly intensive way, and of several periods in which the tissue is in weakly steady states (i.e.. the biochemical reactions are very slow or they almost do not take place). Generally, throughout the life of a human, a bone tissue is several times in the principal weakly steady state, i.e., in such a state in which the long-term remodelling equilibrium is reached. This period lasts for several years (roughly for 6-8 years) in the life of an adult human in his/her productive age, while in the life of a child this period is shorter. Figuratively speaking, the stages of the bone tissue remodelling (during one limit cycle) can be compared to the tissue “childhood and maruraiion” (i.e., n stage of remodelling – apposition of the tissue), and “aging-demise” (I stage of remodelling – resorption). One limit cycle of the bone tissue life (out of the series of the subsequent periodic limit cycles) that is characterized by the bone tissue development, functioning and destruction (in the unit volume element) can be synoptically, and in the real time, described by four stages. The limit cycle is a close trajectory of solution of kinetic equations of bone remodelling. The bone tissue (in its unit volume element) passes through the repeating harmonic limit cycles (i.e., the stable periodic processes) of its development and destruction.

Abstrakty : In the study, the outline of ethiopathogenesis and epidemiology of the lateral spinal curvature is presented. We proposed a simplified verification of the radiography and spirometry factors detected by thermovision investigation conducted on patients of the Outpatient Clinic for Faculty Posture of Cieszyn. The binary, take-off board thermo-pictures were taken using different temperature thresholds, visualised asymmetry of infrared radiation emitted by paravertebral muscles in some kinds of scolioses and symmetric images in normal condition. The different levels of correlation between thermovision picture asymmetry factor (WAT), the value of Cobb's angle and the normal breathing capacity index were obtained, depending on the type of scoliosis.

Abstrakty : The paper deals with the method of modelling of blood pulsatory flow in the vessels of circulatory system. The method is based upon the solution of wave equation applied in the theory of four-pole. In a graphic presentation of a vessel of distributed parameters, a model of bond graphs with new elements of DB type ise used. Basic physiological simulation experiment using bond graphs was performed. The aim of the experiment was to model the changes of pressure and volume in a left heart-aorta segment.

Abstrakty : An analysis of the results of 121 minus-valgizing osteotomies in genu varum performed in the years 1985-1998 allowed the authors to conclude that the recommended by most researchers hyper-corrective valgus positioning of the knee's mechanical axis after an osteotomy resulted in increased postoperative valgity in 12 cases. This complication nullified the intended effect of the operation and required another corrective procedure. Clinical observations showed that the probable causes of the complications could be different, e.g. a significant decrease of bone density in the joint's exterior section, taking over the body-weight load, and the patient's considerable overweight. Whereas the presumptive cause was a limited capability of remodelling of the overloaded exterior section of the joint. In order to determine the magnitude and distribution of static forces in the knee's articular ends, a series of measurements were made using spatial photoelastic models as exact geometrical copies of specimens from autopsy. The measurements have shown that in the case of the hypercorrective position of the joint's axis, an extremely heavy concentration of forces occurs on the relatively small bearing surface of the outer condyle of the tibia. This creates adverse mechanical conditions and makes it impossible to obtain the intended correction angle.

Abstrakty : Velocity of ultrasound and broad-band ultrasound attenuation (BUA) were measured in three perpendicular directions in anisotropic samples of cancellous and cortical bones. The aim was to study tte influence of microarchitecture of bone tissue on ultrasound propagation in bone. The pulse transmission method (1 MHz and 3.5 MHz) and the Fourier analysis of transmitted were applied. The dependence of both ultrasonic parameters on the orientation and the correlation between the degree of the anisotropy and bone density were stated. In cancellous bone samples, both velocity and BUA had extreme value in the direction of trabeculae alingment. In cortical bone, maximal velocity was in the axial direction, while BUA in this direction was minimal. The influence of the anisotropy of bone structure, both cancellous and cortical, on ultrasonic parameters is discussed.

Abstrakty : A 3-space electromagnetic tracking device is used for determinating the position and orientation of a sensor relative to a source by utilizing the principle of low-frequency magnetic field technology. A general description of the application of this system to biomechanical analysis of a spatial rigid body (cadaver elbow as an example) motion is provided. The analysis based on Eulerian angle description has been performed. The system has been found to be quite accurate and easy to use, and it would be a useful tool in kinesiologic research.

Abstrakty : A new approach to porous materials modelling is presented. In this model, a matrix of cells contains a number of randomly distributed void cells in order to obtain the desired porosity. The system is solved by means of a recent numerical method, the Cell Method. As an application, the Young modulus of four sintered alloys is computed and the simulations show a good agreement with the experimental results reported in literature, depending on the porosity of the sintered powder and the Young modulus of the wrought material. Besides this application, the approach is promising in a wider class of problems, namely all those in which a large number of random distributed heterogeneities or voids are present.

Abstrakty : The aim of the study was to analyse the reaction forces arising on single fin surfaces as a result of swimming movements. The crude data were recorded in the form of time-dependent signals representing the reactive water resistance force exerted on fin surface. They were collected using strain gauges and converted assuming sine harmonics to be a model of stability of propulsion generation parameters. The criteria for assessing the quality of the technique allowed us to explain the problem of both the efficiency and utilisation of the forces exerted during swimming.

Abstrakty : A phenomenon of cancerous changes is one of the most difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of contemporary medicine. In this paper, we have described the method which can contribute to further development of cooperation between medical doctors and physicists. We have analyzed 6 cases of cancer located in the upper gingiva using EDX method. All patients (4 males and 2 females) were diagnosed in the 1st Department and Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery, Silesian Medical Academy in Zabrze. The authors observed the changes in the quality and the quantity of mineral composition of healthy and cancerous oral epithelia. The size of oral epithelium carcinoma in the clinical diagnosis was essentially connected with the concentration of calcium which developed into visible forms. This research will be continued, firstly, because of a small group of the patients examined and secondly, because the observed concentrations of calcium, sulphur and phosphorus have been substantially higher in the group of patients with advanced clinical forms of the cancer. We think that this physical method could help in early diagnostics and monitoring of the cancer located in the upper gingiva.
